"Bulb: potential flower buried in Autumn, never to be seen again." - Henry Beard

This cynical definition of a bulb definitely does not apply to the beautiful genus Lachenalia. There is always the promise of beautiful flowers when wild Hyacinth, Cape cowslip or Leopard lilies go to ground. Gardeners would probably never have the opportunity to meet the many indigenous species of Lachenalia growing in nature, but are lucky to have access to gorgeous new varieties developed locally for an appreciative export market.
